7.1.4. Charity Equals Multiple Rewards

The concept of good deeds being multiplied is reflected in the rewards of God being multiplied. The example of the multiple rewards of giving charity is made in the Meccan verses. In Chapter 30 verse 39 the first critique levied at usury on money lending is made. Charity receives multiplied rewards from God whereas the lending of money on interest gains nothing for the lender with God. Later, in Medina the pronouncements against the use of interest were made in stronger terms elevating this practice to forbidden in Islam. Just like the lender receives compounded earnings on lent money, the charity that one gives receives compounded earnings in rewards from God.

In the Gospels in Mark 12:41-44 there is a story about Jesus and his disciples who were watching people submit charity to the treasury. There were a lot of rich contributors, but one poor woman came and donated all that she had with her. Jesus told his disciples in verses 43 to 44 that the poor woman’s contribution was greater than the contribution of the rich because she gave all that she had while the rich simply gave from their abundance. The lesson from this story is that it does not matter how much one gives, but the sacrifice of that contribution is the real power of charity. In this life it may appear as a loss, but as pointed out in the Qur’an it will only multiply the rewards toward Heaven for the person who does this.
